The Authors conclude with a chapter which is an appraisal of the plastic design method, essential of course to an understanding of its appropriate application. A simplified treatment of the analysis of arches under the action of concentrated loads is also given, the assumption being made that flexural action predominates.
Of particular interest, however, is the chapter 'Examples of Complex Frames' in which a treatment is given of the ultimate analysis of plane rectangular grillages, simple orthogonal space frames, and Vierendeel girders. Commencing with the concept of the plastic hinge and the effects of axial loading, shear force and non-uniplanar bending upon carrying capacities of members, the Authors proceed to consider the analysis and design of simple beams and frames, devoting separate chapters to the fundamental theorems associated with the plastic theory, and the application of virtual work methods and the combination of mechanisms to multi-storey multi-bay frames.
